GuardAgents Project Study of Novel Generation nanobodies for agri-food applications

GuardAgents develops a new generation of nanobody-based biopesticides to target Cucumber Mosaic Virus (CMV)—reducing pesticide dependency and supporting sustainable agriculture

The challenge

CMV threatens crop productivity—current control relies heavily on pesticides.

Why this matters

Cucumber Mosaic Virus (CMV) is a major plant virus that can severely impact yields and quality, increasing reliance on chemical inputs.

Our Innovation

Nanobody biopesticides designed to neutralize CMV with precision.

What we’re building

GuardAgents develops recombinant nanobodies and tests two production routes to identify the most effective and practical approach.

Expected Impact

Safer crop protection that supports resilient, sustainable agriculture.

What success looks like

Our goal is to reduce pesticide dependency while maintaining strong protection against CMV—validated with efficacy and safety assessments.

Project Overview

Project at a glance

GuardAgents develops nanobody-based biopesticides targeting Cucumber Mosaic Virus (CMV) to enhance plant immunity and reduce pesticide dependency. The project combines in vitro (E. coli) and in vivo (plant) production, followed by efficacy testing in plants and biosafety assessments.

Grant Agreement ID: 101236168

Programme: Horizon Europe

Action: Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (Staff Exchanges)

Duration: 48 months (1 Nov 2025 – 31 Oct 2029)

Total budget: €1,738,470

Planned effort: 347 person-months across the consortium

Why GuardAgents

Reducing pesticide dependency without compromising crop protection

Conventional pesticide use raises concerns about chemical residues and sustainability. GuardAgents advances nanobody-based alternatives designed to enhance plant immunity, minimize ecological impact, and support long-term agricultural resilience.

Sustainable by
design

We pair performance testing with toxicity and environmental assessments to support responsible deployment.

Academia–industry knowledge exchange
